Online Publishing

I started to learn about publishing at Northwestern University when I did a small amount of volunteer work for a print magazine called N. My senior year I teamed up with some people to publish a text only magazine called Blink on the internet. Although the web had just been invented, the first mainstream web browser Netscape had not been published yet and the on line community was significantly smaller than it is today. Blink's first and only issue was published and widely distributed on the Internet through FTP, Archie, Gopher and NNTP newsgroups. While Blink only had one issue it received critical acclaim in the small world of pre-web on line publishing. In 1996 I regrouped with the editor in chief of Blink and others to create The Site of Big Shoulders. The Site of Big Shoulders is a not-for-profit, 100% volunteer staffed, online magazine promoting Chicago Arts and Artists. It is one of the original online web magazines publishing for over 13 years.
